The cost of one injection-molded part is calculated with this formula:

Per-part cost = (mold cost ÷ total quantity) + material cost per part + processing cost per part + secondary operations per part

Three things to remember:

  1. Mold cost is a one-time investment — it gets spread across your total quantity.
  2. Material and processing costs repeat for every part — they depend on part weight, resin price, cycle time, and cavity count.
  3. The larger your order, the lower your per-part price — because the mold is amortized over more pieces. This is why MOQ and volume planning matter.

1. Mold Cost: One-Time Investment, Amortized Over Volume

The mold is the biggest upfront cost, but it’s paid once. As an industry reference, molds typically fall into these ranges:

2. Material Cost: Resin Price × Part Weight

Material cost repeats for every part. The formula:

Material cost per part = (part weight + runner/waste) × resin price per kg

  • Resin prices vary widely by material type.
  • We process a full range of thermoplastics: PP, ABS, PE, HDPE, PC, PA (Nylon), POM, PVC, and PMMA. Engineering plastics (PC, POM, PA) cost more per kg than commodity resins (PP, HDPE).
  • Runner and sprue waste adds a small percentage; regrind and hot runner systems can reduce this.

Example: a 50 g part molded in PP (roughly $1.50/kg as an industry reference) costs about $0.08–$0.10 per part in material.


3. Processing Cost: Machine Rate × Cycle Time

Processing cost covers machine time, energy, and labor. The formula:

Processing cost per part = machine hour rate × (cycle time ÷ cavity count)

  • Larger machines have higher hour rates but are required for big parts.
  • More cavities per mold = lower processing cost per part (but a higher mold investment).
